WAYNE RANEY - King of the hillbilly harmonica.

Wayne Raney, along with Lonnie Glosson, was instrumental in popularizing harmonica in country music. His solo recordings & work with the Delmore Brothers on King Records are glowing examples of Hillbilly Boogie, the missing link between Country music and Rockabilly.

Wayne Raney was born in Wolf Bayou, Arkansas in 1921. He was born with a deformed foot. He saw a one-armed man playing harmonica for money an it inspired Wayne to learn the instrument. He ran away from home and at the age of thirteen ended up in Eagle Pass, Texas, where he made a grand total of $3.75 playing harmonica in a bar. Here he was seen by the manager of XEPM radio, who gave him a spot on the radio and odd jobs around the station.

It was through playing radio stations that he met Lonnie Glosson, an older harmonica player also from Arkansas, and the Delmore Brothers. The Delmore Brothers had a contract with King Records in Cincinatti and they brought Wayne Raney with them.

Threw a little jump blues in the mix. An R&B cover of a country hit. It did pretty well for Bull Moose Jackson as well.
