Digging up some great blues from the Past tonight on R&R.
Almost all of tonight's tracks feature blues artists who passed away sometime in October over the years... as a kind of Halloween warm-up.

| Sick Bed Blues Skip James - Hard Time Killing Floor Blues |
| Up next, a cover of another Skip James song, 'Cypress Grove Blues'. Just because... why not? |
| Cypress Grove Blues Ali Farka Touré & Corey Harris - Mississippi to Mali |
| Skip James died October 3rd, 1969 in Philadelphia, PA. |
| Any Kind a Man Victoria Spivey - Victoria Spivey Vol. 4 1936-1937 |
| Victoria Spivey also died on October 3rd, but in 1976 in New York, NY.
She was born on October 15th 1906 in Huston, TX. |
| I Hear You Knocking Smiley Lewis - The Best of Smiley Lewis: I Hear You Knocking |
| Smiley Lewis died on October 7th, 1966 in New Orleans, Louisiana. |
| Kokomo Blues Scrapper Blackwell - The Virtuoso Guitar of... |
| Francis "Scrapper" Blackwell also died on October 7th, four years earlier than Smiley Lewis, in 1962 in Indianapolis... Indiana. (Sorry for the confusion!) |
| Gonna Raise a Ruckus Tonight Gus Cannon - Walk Right In |
| Gus Cannon passed away on October 15th, 1979 in Memphis, Tennessee.
The name of the group I was trying to remember (who popularized "Walk Right In" and was featured on the Forest Gump soundtrack, among others) was, in fact, The Rooftop Singers. Now you know! |
| Fine and Mellow Alberta Hunter - Blues Classics |
| Alberta Hunter died on October 17th, 1984 in New York, NY. |
| Levee Camp Moan Son House - The Original Delta Blues |
| Son House died on October 19th, 1988 in Detroit, Michigan. |
| Pork Chop Blues Sam Collins - Complete Recorded Titles: 1927-1931 |
| Sam Collins died in Chicago, Illinois on October 20th, 1949. |
| Barefoot Blues Jaydee Short - St. Louis Country Blues: 1929-1937 |
| Jaydee Short died on October 21st, 1962 in St. Louis, MO. |
| We Sure Got Hard Times Barbecue Bob - The Great Depression: American Music in the 30s |
| Robert Hicks... or 'Barbecue Bob' also died on October 21st, but in 1931 in Lithonia, Georgia. |
| See That My Grave is Kept Clean Blind Lemon Jefferson - Anthology of American Folk Music vol. 3B: Songs |
| Blind Lemon Jefferson died in late December... but he was BORN on OCtober 26th.
I chose this song because it was about a grave, which seemed to fit the theme. There's a great Hattie McDaniel track I didn't have time to play tonight (she died on Blind Lemon Jefferson's birthday, in 1952), but I'll try to fit it into a future show. Stay tuned! |
