Fall 2023 - Episode 4

As usual, the Midweek team was off and running as soon as they walked into the newsroom. Prior to our 8:30 a.m. start-time, each reporter convened into same-day reporting teams using a lively Midweek Instagram group chat to deliberate on prospective same-day stories. This week’s production team also took the initiative to meet late last night and emailed Professor Nana aba an outline of their planned lineup for today’s broadcast. It made for an impressive start to the show. All news items were on the show producer’s blackboard and logged into the run-sheet by 9:30am! As they worked, students snacked on bananas, Timbits, and coffee. The live show featured stories about the current political climate both domestically and internationally, such as updates on the Israeli–Hamas conflict, a series of devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan’s Herat province, and the ramifications of the ‘Freedom Convoy’ trial in Ottawa. Next in the line-up involved the swearing in of Manitoba’s first Anishinaabe premier, Wab Kinew and his cabinet in Winnipeg; a National Art Centre performance of the seventies classic Grease with an Indigenous twist; as well as the Moving Art Gallery’s first-ever fashion show featuring two Ottawa-based Black and queer designers. There were also stories about Ottawa’s second annual Oktoberfest and a group that aims to create a traditional trick-or-treating experience for children with disabilities. The newsroom encountered a few glitches, such as a printer jam which set us back by about 20 minutes!
