Hi. I saw Butch Morris conduct a group of improvisers at the Vancouver Jazz Fest, early 90s. He would basically point to a musician when he wanted him to solo. I also saw David Murray with a rhythm section in 1992, at Upstairs in Old Montreal. Very memorable, medium size room, recorded by Radio-Canada. The band was on the stage and someone introduces David Murray, in from Japan... He walks to the stage from the back. Counts off, starts playing, but the others don't play. He stops. Then, the rhythm section starts and the "star" joins in. The piece "Spoons" was quite intense. Nice memory.

Watching it on our phones as we speak! Very cool Neil! It has to be a bigger stage than at Sweet Basil!

Hi, Neil. Miles Davis in the early 70s would point at musicians when he wanted them to solo... electric Miles.

I found that live show link this morning when I was checking out what you 2 gentlemen had cooking for this late afternoon. BTW.....that is another thing I really respect about you guys........you post the show early so I have time to explore the discography of the artists you have chosen to share with us. In the case of David Murray today, that link was superb........but your double dose from Sweet Basil is blowing it out of the water!!!..I know I have said this before.......but.....your entire concept, with a thick layer of your knowledge on top, and smothered in another layer of your passion for this music is irresistable to "hungry ears". I am looking forward to many years ahead for your unique program. I am sure all the Mighty musicologists, your fellow hosts, tune in every week too. Thanks for being part of Sunday with CKCU ; 3 of my favourite shows one after another. Long live The Mighty 93.1
