Smetana is the Czech word for cream. You ain't no Slav unless you like sour cream....
The piano Antonín Kubálek recorded the four Polkas on was an amazing Bösendorfer, which I had an opportunity to perform on from time to time. It had the most impressive resonant bass range. Kubálek nicknamed it "Big Bertha"....it was the seventies.
The last two songs sung by Jan Kiepura were composed for him by Bronisław Kaper. He was already a famous film composer in Poland before he had to flee the Nazis in 1939, and establish himself in an equally successful career composing Hollywood film and television soundtracks.
