The theme for this edition of Stranger Songs is "Remembering Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon." Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon was a noted singer – probably best known for founding and leading the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock. She was a prominent civil rights activist and a member of The SNCC Freedom Singers in the 1960s. Later, she served as cultural historian in music history at the Smithsonian Institution, curator of music history for the National Museum of American History, and as a distinguished professor of history at American University. She died on July 16 at age 81. Click on LISTEN NOW to hear this show. Click on LISTEN to hear the current CKCU broadcast.
