Bedtime Stories
Tuesday May 18th, 2021 with Chris Lyne
On Three, or on Six or on Twelve even.

This evening's show features music that was recorded partly or mainly or entirely in 3/4 , 6/8 or 12/8 time. Loosely speaking, sounding like slow, moderate or speedy waltzes. But, as often happens, some tunes we'll hear have one or several time signature changes. And what may start off as a waltz may suddenly change into something else entirely. Either way, there's all sorts happening on this evening's edition. And, as ever, you're invited to suggest or recommend tunes along these lines for a future show.

On a recent edition of Bedtime Stories we traced the history of the Fender Rhodes piano, which has become a prolific instrument in many genres of music. Here is a site that explores and celebrates the instrument further: the video features Robin Lumley (heard playing with Brand X on this show) chatting about its musical qualities.

Hi Chris, Listening outside tonight on my iPad and ear buds. There is a moon up in the sky and the temperature is pleasant. I’m enjoying the tunes. I’ve never heard this version of The Water Is Wide.

Hi Shelley, Yes, a beautiful rendition to enjoy on what sounds like a lovely evening somewhere in the West End (and the East End too, probably!) :-)

Really enjoying the jazz—reminds me of being outdoors at Confederation Park volunteering at the Ottawa Jazz Festival—in the before-times, when we actually WENT to music festivals.

There are a lot of ‘waltzes’ to choose from! Don’t know where to begin. Never thought of Manic Depression as a waltz—but it is.
