A wonderful short story by Sjef Frenken and read by his late friend Richard Malcolm Thomas. The Hunter - it's a great tale!
2 weeks ago we heard some stories read by Sjef Frenken, and some songs sjef wrote based on old traditional tales. Today we are going to hear one of Sjef’s original stories, read by his friend the late Richard Malcolm Thomas.
Says Sjef:
"The Hunter is one of my original stories. I first had the idea when I came to Canada in the early fifties, but never did anything with it until I was grown up. I don’t remember the exact date, but it was well before 2006, the year the narrator died. His name was Richard Malcolm Thomas. I knew him from my days at CHFI-FM when I did some work there while I was attending Ryerson in the late fifties. Later, when I was manager at CFMO-FM in Ottawa, I hired him and he worked here till mid-1963. He was quite a fellow – an actor, broadcaster, environmentalist, and politician. He lost his run against Ernie Eves (who for a while was premier of Ontario, by 6 votes, which earned Ernie the nickname “Landslide Ernie”. Anyhow, not long before his death he recorded my narrative poem in iambic heptametre. He was going to do more, but a fatal car accident intervened. The Hunter too is included in Tales Told and Retold."
