I'm Talking Here!
Monday February 17th, 2020 with Joshua Robert Bateman and Josh Murray
Like Father, Like Son / Time Without Pity (Family Day Special)
Send your bear mom, your bookcase dad, and your disappearing skeleton ancestor this extra special Family Day broadcast of I'm Talking Here! In honour of the occaison, the Joshes at last emancipate themselves from 2019 cinema and the Oscar race to reflect on two older favourites, each new to one of the hosts.
First, there's talk of Hirokazu Kore-eda's switched-at-birth drama Like Father, Like Son (2013). The Joshes have minor differences over the movie's pacing and use of "Hook dad" clichés, but agree on the general vibes of rad dad Lily Franky's face. There are also rampant mentions and comparisons to the Palme d'Or-winning Shoplifters, which was both hosts' #1 film of 2018!
Then, in a discovery sure to rattle film historians, the Joshes have unearthed the existence of a film even older than the previous oldest film they'd ever covered, Sleuth (1972). It's Time Without Pity (1957), directed by Joseph Losey and starring Michael Redgrave, and it's very good!
Plus, listen for everywhere to catch up on or revisit Parasite (2019) on the big screen in town, and next week's lead subject, Celine Sciamma's sweeping queer romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019).
