I'm Talking Here!
Monday February 24th, 2020 with Josh Murray and Joshua Robert Bateman
Portrait of a Lady on Fire / D.E.B.S.
The effusive praise is near-limitless (pill) as the Joshes weigh in on Céline Sciamma's finally released Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), which stars Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel and certainly is cliff cinema. They talk stellar longing in queer cinema, the film's many prizes and acclaims, and the rise of the buzzy newish distributor NEON.
The other subject is Angela Robinson's D.E.B.S. (2004), a spy comedy with an absolute knockout of a Jordana Brewster performance. This silly, poorly received movie sparks admiration from both hosts and a surprising amount of nuanced analysis and compliment about all the ways it isn't the dumb thing it looks like. Plus, Scud!
Josh M. also weighs in somewhat on the new Dee Rees/Anne Hathaway picture The Last Thing He Wanted (2020), which lived down to its title for him.
Next week: The Invisible Man (1933), Hollow Man (2000) and The Invisible Man (2020), in an audio-only episode.
