I'm Talking Here!
Monday December 16th, 2019 with Joshua Robert Bateman and Josh Murray
The Nightingale: 40, Michael Bay: 6 (Underground)
It's a thorough discussion of what's in town this week for most of the episode. The Joshes, in a wacky mood, decree that you may want to skip Bombshell (2019), but spotlight reasons to see a host of 2019 releases:
-Todd Haynes' legal thriller Dark Waters
-Nicolas Bedos' French romcom La Belle Époque
-Mati Diop's Senegalese sci-fi romance Atlantics
-Clint Eastwood's latest wronged-by-system subject Richard Jewell
-Tom Hooper's madcap nightmare Cats
-J.J. Abrams' indie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, starring Domhnall Gleeson
Then the day's main subject is Jennifer Kent's Tasmania-set drama The Nightingale (2018), which spoke to Josh M. The hosts praises the virtues of period authenticity, subverting revenge genre conventions, good Native characters, Australian cinema's strong streak, non-exploitative trauma, and the complex performances of Aisling Franciosi, Sam Claflin, and Baykali Ganambarr.
Josh M. was less impressed with Michael Bay's 6 Underground (2019), which sees Ryan Reynolds in a familiar reference-meta zone, and not much in terms of character or originality.
The video shouted out was David Ehrlich's 25 Best Movies of 2019 Video Countdown from IndieWire.
Next time: Star Wars!
