Knives Out for the Sleuths
This go-around on I'm Talking Here!, the central topic is Rian Johnson's fifth film Knives Out (2019). Both hosts are fans, and get into the Hercule Poirot-influenced detective, Johnson's reputation for subverting tropes, the humour, the social commentary of today, class politics, The Last Jedi backlash, standout performances by Ana de Armas, Daniel Craig, Toni Collette, and Michael Shannon, and where Knives Out ranks in the Johnson oeuvre.
The most-discussed other murder mystery is Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Sleuth (1972), with hedge mazes and jokes on the viewer and Michael Caine. Other mysterious death flicks that come recommended are Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980), Jonathan Lynn's Clue (1985), Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express (2017), and especially Robert Altman's Gosford Park (2001).
Check out Waves (2019) and The Two Popes (2019) in town this weekend.
