A workshop with Kai Cheng Thom $20/$10 sliding scale (student/senior/limited income) ***If the fee makes this workshop inaccessible for you, please just let us know and we'll be happy to waive it! Drop by the store, or get in touch with us at education@venusenvy.ca*** WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: In many ways, the end of the world has never seemed closer: climate crisis, fascist resurgence, and late-stage capitalism are ravaging the planet and all of our communities. Perhaps most heartbreaking of all, radical queer and social justice communities often seem intent on tearing each other apart through call-out culture, political infighting, and punitive justice just when we need each other most. Coinciding with the launch of her new book I HOPE WE CHOOSE LOVE: A Trans Girl's Notes from the End of the World, Kai Cheng Thom offers this informal, discussion-based workshop as a healing space for community members who are searching for a better way to love one another. Kai Cheng will offer some practical tools for resolving intra-community conflict, transforming call-out culture, and working as activists to heal collective trauma. Participants should come ready to respect their own and others' boundaries. The topics above may be emotionally challenging or triggering; therefore, self-care is encouraged. All workshop activities are optional. FACILITATOR BIO: Kai Cheng Thom is a writer, performance artist, and community healer in Toronto. Her novel Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir was released by Metonymy Press in 2016. Her first poetry book, a place called No Homeland, and her children's picture book From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea, illustrated by Kai Yun Ching and Wai-Yant Li, were both published by Arsenal Pulp Press in 2017. An essay collection entitled I Hope We Choose Love was released in 2019. Kai Cheng won the Writers' Trust of Canada's Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ Emerging Writers in 2017. https://www.facebook.com/events/533692430742018/ December 13th, 2019 6:30 pm 4th Annual Ugly Holiday Sweater Party QUEERS & BEERS at Mill Street Brew Pub (upstairs in the Brewmaster Room) Doors @ 6:30 pm $5 Cover.
