Two person track of fun! Just Piano and Drums. Jasen Colson is a multi-instrumentalist whose career as an Ottawa Musician spans nearly 20 years, covering a wide range of groups and styles. Highlights include drumming/fronting hard rock outfit Twelve34 as well as twice touring Europe as the drummer of celtic punk band, Siobhan. Jasen played keys for the musical theatre production Phantom of the Opry, staged at Ottawa’s Gladstone Theatre in February of 2017. He currently plays drums and sings with pub rockers Brown Paper Bag & Sven at Würk. Carolina Arnoni says: “I started piano when I was 6 years old and immediately fell in love with it. Even as a mini me, I Sweeney Todd’ed the situation and knew that the second my fingers touched those keys, at last, my arms were complete. I started classically and branched out in my university days to the wonderful world of jazz and discovered my love of the genre along with latin, pop and funk styles. My experience includes accompanying in musical theatre and jazz, competing in interprovincial music competitions, playing in seniors’ homes and the Veteran’s Health Centre (music therapy), playing in ensembles, bands (including The Jasen Colson Band) and duos as well as a bit of jazz vocals” Both Carolina and Jasen play in “Jumpin’ Joel Flash & The Magic Machine”! “Mark J. Nyvlt is a Canadian singer-song writer. Born in Ottawa, but traveled extensively around the world. Coming from an international family, he was exposed to the pulse of international matters at an early age. Schooled at Canterbury High School for the Arts (Classical guitar), Nyvlt was fortunate enough to witness a rich array of talent in all the fields of the Arts. Sadly, Nyvlt put the guitar down for a very long 15 years while pursuing his studies and his Ph.D. in Ancient Greek Philosophy at Boston University. He now compensates for this loss of time. Now, a permanent professor of Ancient Greek Philosophy at the Dominican University (Ottawa), he continues to integrate philosophical themes into his songs, along with the political and quotidian events of life. He performs regularly in Ottawa and collaborates with the very talented community of musicians in Ottawa.”

“This is the music of Taylor Angus, the fast-emerging duo featuring namesake singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Taylor Angus and her partner, guitarist/songwriter Logan Brown. Together, the pair - by their reckoning, spiritual cousins to Buckingham Nicks but musically closer to Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass – crafts original songs so unique yet accessible that their brilliant new six-track EP, Sympathy For You, can be viewed as both an artistic statement and a statement of intent.” Playing at Pressed on Friday! North Ontario Bet Smith & The Currie Brothers - s/t |
https://soundcloud.com/betsmith/north-ontario
From Bet, "Free to download, but I do have one ask. Do the planet a favour and commit to better recycling habits. Whether it be washing your recyclables before pitching them in the bin, sorting them better, or separating materials from one another, make at least one, but better yet, a few small changes in your recycling ways. So much of our dirty and mismanaged recyclables end up contaminating other materials, turning the whole lot into garbage that goes to the landfill. We can do better. We learned about it in elementary school." |
Walking in the Dark Brock Zeman - Pulling Your Sword Out of the Devil's Back |
When it comes to storytelling, Brock Zeman is a master craftsman. The Canada-based singer-songwriter has spent the past 12 years carving and chiseling Americana soundscapes, drawing from roots-rock and alternative country. But what separates Zeman from his contemporaries isn’t a willingness to speak truth – it’s his unwillingness to conform to the rules of Nashville and the traditional framework of genre. What gives Zeman’s stories force isn’t that he’s just singing a narrative – he’s living it.
Brock-Zeman-photo-by-Jamie-KronickOver the course of his career, Zeman has released 12 studio albums, one live record, toured North America extensively and received praise from numerous press outlets. “His songs have more depth than can be realized first time through, which only enhances with each listen,” wrote Penguin Eggs. Zeman has also won a slew of songwriting awards, including 2nd place at both 2016’s Unsigned Only Competition as well as the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) for his track “Pulling Your Sword Out Of The Devil’s Back.” In 2017 he returned to ISC as a finalist with his song “Dead Man’s Shoes.” Playing at Irenes on Friday!
