Futuropaco!! Zappa's 'Shut Up and Play Your Guitar'! Souljazz Orchestra's 'Manifesto!!
A rough couple of weeks begets a good Nightwatch - Managed to Find Zappa's 'Shut Up And Play Your Guitar' box set so will visit a few track from that in the Nightwatch, as well as the latest from the El Paraiso Record Label, 'Futuropaco'! We'll finish up with a 2008 Afrobeat effort from Local Heroes the Souljazz Orchestra!
Ahh, the brilliant Swans live document from the 'finish' of their career in the late-90's. It's finally been re-issued on vinyl... but it turns out it's a 4-LP box, which costs a pretty penny. While I'm not able to get that, the digital version will suffice. |
Feel Happiness Swans - Are Dead |
The Sound Swans - Are Dead |
Continuing on with some Ottawa-kraut from just last year... then some Krautrock Klassic! |
MRI Pt 1 Crab Boat - Quality Rolls |
Tape Kebab Can - Peel sessions |
Justin Pinkerton (drummer & composer in famed psych-rockers Golden Void), from Oakland, California, is the one-man army behind the opaque merge of seemingly different forces: from mad fuzz guitar breakdowns à la Morricone at his most intense, to the syncopated drum learnings of Can’s Jaki Liebezeit, Justin weaves a blanket of sound that’s simply loaded with deep vibes: From heavily modulate Moog synths, gentle glockenspiel through amplified echo-perplexion. You almost forget that Justin’s main instrument is actually the drums - if it wasn’t for the superb loaded-yet-understated grooves tying everything together in an intricate tangle. |
Fantasma Arancione Futuropaco - Futuropaco |
Seppelire Fascisti Futuropaco - Futuropaco |
Fuoco Palude Futuropaco - Futuropaco |
Re Di Mezogne Futuropaco - Futuropaco |
Ballare Sulla Tua Tomb Futuropaco - Futuropaco |
La Pura Bianco Futuropaco - Futuropaco |
On to a set of 'misc', starting with another track from a band that we featured on the last Nightwatch. I figured it would be a good mix with Futuropaco... |
The Timely Death of 2017 Modulators - Drivetime |
The Decline of the West and Other Small Tragedies Monobrow - The Nacarat |
The State Bailter Space - Thermos |
Washed and Wild Sandcatchers - What We Found Along The Way |
Demon Jigging Spoon Mahogany Frog - Do5 |
The previous set were all tracks from 'fairly' recently (OK, the Balter Space cut was from '89...)... now we go back to the Early '70's with a Q-prog obscurity... |
Hyperboree, Civilization 'Un' Franck Dervieux - Dimension 'M' |
Ballad of Joe Pimp Nucleus - We'll Talk About It Later |
Willie The Pimp Frank Zappa - Hot Rats |
As luck would have it, I rolled accross the 3-LP box set of Frank Zappa's 'Shut Up and Play Your Guitar'... so here are a few tracks of Frank shredding! This one's for Bobby Marquis and Pure Radio Chaos! I will probably dip into this in future Nightwatches! I believe it was Frank who said something like: "..only with an amplified electric guitar can you be truly obscene..", and I believe it. Even though the backing tracks are a little tame (unbelievably well-played, yes), but the guitar is CUSSIN'!! |
Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar Frank Zappa - Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar |
Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar Some More Frank Zappa - Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar |
Return of the Son of Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar Frank Zappa - Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar |
Finishing up with an LP I never did get from locals, Souljazz Orchestra, called 'Manifesto', released in 2009. It's more of an afrobeat offering, and I have looked for it for a long time. |
