Bret Higgins’ Atlas Revolt is the brainchild of the Toronto bassist and created as a vehicle for his original instrumental compositions. Formed in 2013, the group explores genre-defying music that draws inspiration largely from film scores, jazz, rock, surf, and elements of Eastern European, African and South American music. Notably gaining the attention of New York saxophonist-composer John Zorn, their first CD was released on his Tzadik Records in 2015. On their sophomore recording Illusion Machine, the usual line-up adds sixth man of the year, virtuoso Columbian percussionist Juan Carlos Medrano to the fold, elevating the overall sound into a darker and more orchestral space.

This is the debut LP from Midwood, led by violinist Jake Shulman-Ment, Midwood is an experimental klezmer/rock/avant garde celebration of freedom and the Jewish tradition of wandering and migration. This new group, also featuring Yoshie Fruchter (guitar), Richie Barshay (drums, percussion), and Eléonore Weill (vocals), seamlessly traverses borders through original compositions, expansive improvisations on traditional melodies, and heart-wrenching re-imaginings of Yiddish folk songs.
