Swing Is In The Air
Sunday March 19th, 2023 with Bruce Walton
Two vibes players: Lionel Hampton and Milt Jackson

Prior to the 1960's, the vibraphone was not much used in jazz (and it remains far less common than sax, trumpet, etc., no doubt due to its size). Lionel Hampton and Milt Jackson, along with Red Norvo, were the main players on the instrument. Hampton is primarily associated with the Swing era, including his work with Benny Goodman; Jackson with a more modern style of jazz, not least his appearance on some of the first Thelonious Monk recordings.

For fans of the vibraphone and current iterations check out Joel Ross ,s Parable of the Poet. Reminiscent of many of Carla Bleys orchestrations with Gary Burton.

GREAT vibes! This whole shoooow is reminding of my dear friend's dad ... he insisted on first name even with we mid teens, a long time ago now .. Lloyd. Many of these were in the stacks. He had a truly amazing record collection, wall to wall. + really good baby grand piano and hi end (at the time) audio setup. And insistent "well, you obviously need to listen to this next". Anything from Gregorian chants to King Crimson, too...... . RIP Lloyd, and Ben.
