Messengers and Crusaders

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers were one of the great performing institutions in jazz history, an early leader in the hard bop style that, along with cool jazz, pushed pure bebop into the background, and a finishing school for numerous young players who went on to stellar careers in their own right after honing their craft as Jazz Messengers. The Jazz Crusaders, originally from Houston, moved to LA in the late 1950's, and were a fixture on the west coast scene from the early 1960's on. Unlike the Messengers, their lineup barely changed over time, but, like Blakey's group, they played a very satisfying hard bop style.
