Often considered the successor of Gil Evans, George Russell and Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider and her orchestras have created some of the most outstanding large orchestra music in the last 15 years. Nominated for Grammy Awards on 18 occasions with nine awards to her credit, her orchestra has also been a perennial favourite in Down Beat polls for several years. Schneider's music with it intricate rhythms, exquisite melodies and interesting harmonies brings together cool progressive jazz, the avant garde, and contemporary classical music. Her latest album "The Thompson Fields"has been widely acclaimed by NPR, The Nation, Stereophile, and The New York Times. It has received Grammy nominations for large jazz ensemble album and best jazz solo.
