Planet Fusion

Anoushka Shankar vs. flamenco, Abdullah Ibrahim vs. remix culture, free-jazz trombone guru Roswell Rudd vs. kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate, Javanese Gamelan vs. 20th century minimalism and early European musicians vs. South America in another roundup of intriguing planetary fusions. Some new releases, some old faves and the usual planet hopping.

We end today's fusion show with a taste of a record that I'll play some more of next time I'm on. Gamelan music was a big influence on the minimalist composers of the 20th century, and the Gamelan of Central Java returns the favor with a record influenced by Terry Riley's seminal "In C" on traditional Javanese Gamelan instruments.

Nice start. I have not heard Traveller, but am a HUGE Anoushka fan. BTW, Kathak dance and Flamenco also have a very deep shared history -- migration of the Gypsies...

Those Gypsies are fertile! I'll have to check out Kathak. Don't know anything about it! But yeah, if you're a fan of Anoushka, I recommend the new album - well, listen for yourself!

Rob, great show! Mr.rudd was good, and the `fusion`is terrific! Anoushka and flamenco was beautful. Where would one pick up the CD.

Hey folks! Sorry for my tardy replies here: my browser wasn't reloading the chat, so I just saw these now. DD: glad you stuck around. Lots of cool stuff today. Bill: glad you're listening. We miss you, and I figured you'd like the Anoushka, since it's really the combination of two string traditions. The CD is out there, on Deuthsche Grammaphone records. Should be easily available online now.

...just spell "Deutsche Grammaphon" better than I did if you're looking up the lable!
