Cesaria Evora / Christmas / The New Guy
In the first hour, Alnoor Allidina plays music recorded by the late, great Cesaria Evora and other musicians with Cape Verdean roots. The second hour features Shrim's klezmer Nutcracker suite and the third hour will be hosted by Mick Panesar, the newest member of the TIE collective. Welcome back to CKCU Mick!
Today, we begin the program with a tribute to Cesaria Evora. Born in Cape Verde in 1941, Evora was 47 before her international singing career took off. Her debut album was released in 1988, a year after the record industry started a concerted effort to promote and label "world music".
A great voice and proper marketing soon brought Evora to the attention of the world. The mid-nineties found her touring internationally and selling hundreds of thousands of records. The new millennium brought continued success, including major music awards and continued touring. She officially retired in September 2011 due to health issues and passed away yesterday in Cape Verde. |
