Featuring a TOTALLY INCREDIBLE re-imagining of Terry Riley's revolutionary minimalist piece 'In C' -- this time from Brooklyn Raga Massive. Played in full today. Of the many, many versions of this piece, this raga-fied imagining of it is one of my personal favorites. Expansive, highly trance-inducing, pure complex minimalist bliss to totally blow your mind. JUST WOW!

Here's how 'In C' works, basically: There is a constant rhythm drone on middle C, that drives the whole piece from start to end and kinda makes it all hang together. The drone is the first, and last, heard, and always present. Overlaid are 53 sequences of tones, ranging from single notes to multiple bars, to be played in rough order at the individual musicians' choosing. All in key of C, played at any speed, with any number or mix of musicians and instruments. There is no set sequence. There might be a conductor ... or not. If I got the math right, that means there are pretty much infinite variations possible, and ranging from just a few minutes to until all the players drop dead from exhaustion.

Put down whatever homework, housework, or whatever else you are currently pretending to do. And clamp on your very best head-phones. Sit back, and just absorb.

Hi PeterB, Just tuned in and hearing In C. Glad you are hosting today as I have a question that you might be able to answer for me. What was the name of that series of music where they took sounds from various subway stations? The _______ project? I could look it up, but thought I would ask you first.

Hi S.A.M. Glad are listening. Yeah, this rendition of In C is very trance-inducing! You're probably referring to the 'Cities And Memory' project. There are now several recording out there now. All are essentially remixes from field recordings and other found objects. The one featuring sounds from the London subways is 'The Next Station'. Probably the one you are meaning. Does that help?

Absolutely! That’s the one I was thinking of. Given that we are going to get an LRT, there may be a place for some of it on WTMW. Thanks sooooo much!
