An Indian Morning
Sunday June 2nd, 2024 with Dr. Harsha V. Dehejia and Kishore "Kish" Sampat
An Indian Morning, celebrating and seeking the spirit of India thru sounds, stories, music & songs. REMEMBERING RAJ KAPOOR - (DEC 14 1924 - JUNE 2 1988)

This Sunday morning let us take a leaf from the Pipal tree and a petal from the lotus and write on it a wish, a prayer and a love letter and float it in the river and as we watch it go by and hear the music of the waves we are sure that Kanha will pick up our letter and respond to it by playing the flute. Welcome to an Indian Morning. These stages are (ascending order) – *dilkashi* or *hub *(attraction), *uns* (attachment), *ishq* (love), *akidat* (trust), *ibadat* (worship), *junoon* (madness), and finally *Maut* (death). Lyricist Gulzar has beautifully penned the lyrics in such a way that you can notice these seven stages. Notice how Mani Ratnam changed Manisha Koirala’s dress seven times in seven colours to portray these stages of love. When we look at the seven stages and the seven colours, the song’s name fits like a jigsaw puzzle …. Modus operandi *Vibgyor* (rainbow: Saat Rang) The protagonist wears black throughout showing him experience the stages of love and in the end both artists are wearing white which denotes death. The song was shot in the lifeless desert of Ladakh. If you listen to the audio and also see the enacting in the video, you will clearly see the 7 stages mentioned above. Though my favourite is the Ghalib’s verse, (which sums it all) “Ishq par zor nahin hai yeh woh aatish Ghalib Jo lagaye na lage, aur bujhaaye na bane”. In real life we don’t see such situations, the lyrics have however successfully managed to deliver an “apocalyptic fatalism” that is established and thematically resonated in the song. This song is best enjoyed as an audio/ video experience. Take a trip with this great “SATRANGI RE” from “DIL SE”. 03-SATRANGI RE CD MISC-20240602 TRACK#03 7:01 DIL SE-1998; SONU NIGAM, KAVITA KRISHNAMURTHY; A. R. REHMAN; GULZAR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGq8zzC0ZQY Raj Kapoor was born on 14 December 1924 and took his last breath on 2nd June 1988. The Actor married Krishna Malhotra in 1946 and both had five children. Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor, Reema Kapoor, and Ritu Nanda. Raj Kapoor was born in Peshawar as the son of Prithvi Raj Kapoor (Father) and Ramsarni Mehra Kapoor (Mother). He was the eldest sibling of six children in the family. He was the grandson of Dewan Basheshwarnath Kapoor, Great-Grandson of Dewan Keshavmal Kapoor, Great-Great-Grandson of Dewan Murli Mal Kapoor, and was part of the famous Kapoor Family. His brothers were the late actors Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. He also had a sister named Urmila Sial. Raj Kapoor was an asthma patient. At the age of 63, he went to the Dadasaheb Phalke Awards in New Delhi. As we know that he was an asthma patient, he always kept his asthma kit with him, however on that day he was not allowed to carry his kit to the Award function. Security took his kit with him, still he entered the function. After a while he was not feeling well, so the President came to his seat in the event and gave him the Award. After all of that, as his condition went more critical, he was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Science Hospital in New Delhi for treatment. He remained there for almost 1 month. At the time of his death, he was working on the film Henna and later his film was completed by his sons, Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor. JUNE 2nd today is the 36th death anniversary of the greatest showman Raj Kapoor Saab. Let’s remember him through his philosophical songs of Mera Naam Joker. In the movie these songs are played in pieces. Shree Atul Shah has tried to join them all in one single video.
