An Indian Morning
Sunday June 6th, 2021 with Dr. Harsha V. Dehejia and Kishore "Kish" Sampat
An Indian Morning, celebrating and seeking the spirit of India thru sounds, stories, music & songs.
Namaste!
It has been said that Sutra or a thread has many meanings for us.
Tied on a wrist, it is a blessing from the guru or the sister.
Attached to a tree. it is asking for a boon; used in Pooja it is the Vastra of the Gods. When it comes out of the spinning wheel. It is converted to Khadi; with a needle, it can create patterns on fabrics like kaadha; in our sacred books on what upon the Savitri. The wife ties threads to a tree and ask for a long life for her husband.
Truly, it has been said that we can write the history of India with a thread. Welcome to An Indian Morning.

In the current context of communal polarization, legislations against inter-religious love and a pandemic that has stoked our fears about disease and death – this multi-faith medley is an Indian family’s attempt to sing together for wellness, while reflecting on love, light and healing.
Isn’t that what religions are trying to help us find within?
The multi-faith medley begins with the first few lines of the Sikh prayer ‘Ek Onkar,’ which implies “singularity in spite of the seeming multiplicity of existence.”
The chorus of Noor-E-Azal, a Sufi song, asks the “Light of the beginning, Light of God, Light of Both Worlds” to fill up the seeker with Noor or light and reveal the path.
The last stanza of the Christian song “Yendaishayame” celebrates an incomparable love that never shuns a seeker who has fallen on difficult times but deeply nourishes.
Tayatha Om, a Buddhist prayer, seeks healing and the elimination of pain and suffering in all realms of life.
The Hindu Shanti mantra (Peace chant) ‘Asatoma Sadgamaya’ asks that we be led from untruth to truth, darkness to light and death to "that which is undying."

An Indian Morning”

Gulzar is no stranger to Rabindranath Tagore. While assisting director Hemen Gupta on the film Kabuliwala (1961), based on Tagore’s story, Gulzar wrote the lyrics of Ganga Aaye Kahan Se, which was set to the tune of an east Bengal bhatyali (boatman) folk composition by Salil Chowdhury. Gulzar’s obsession with all things Bengali began to take shape, from the use of melodies to films inspired by Bengali writers and filmmakers. His marriage to the actress Rakhee, whom he humorously referred to as his “bangalan” wife, turned the Sikh writer into a “half Bengali”, he said.
The non-film album Gulzar in Conversation with Tagore features seven songs based on Hindi translations of poems by Tagore. The indefatigable 84-year-old poet and filmmaker has written the lyrics for compositions by Shantanu Moitra and Shreya Ghoshal, all rendered by the singer Shaan.
The nightingale voice of Bollywood - Shreya Ghoshal has sung 'Singaar Ko Rehne Do' from the album 'Gulzar in Conversation With Tagore'. The elegance of Tagore’s poetry is weaved into lyrics by Gulzar Sahab and Shantanu Moitra’s music compliments it. Though it's sung from a guy's perspective it’s one song that every girl can surely relate to.

Do you know that, for the film Dharam Karam, originally Pancham da recorded the song 'Ik din bik jayega....' with his most lovable and favourite Kishore Da, but Raj Kapoor said, 'Kishore is a genius no doubt. But my soul voice is "Mukesh" only.
So replace this song in his voice. Then Pancham recorded again with Mukesh ji which was in the movie.
Here is the original song in Kishore Da's voice followed by Mukesh’s version. Which is better? You be the judge!
