Though, it is known as a harvest festival, Lohri is celebrated across India as it marks the passing of Winter solstice, which happens to be the shortest day and longest night of the year. Punjabis regard the day of winter solstice as a new year which is celebrated on Maghi the next day. It is traditional to eat Gajak, Sarson da saag with Makki di roti, radish, ground nuts and jaggery.
