Adagio I am Black History My skin tells a tale My ancestors dark So how then am I pale They talk and talk Lips utter to and fro But still no warmth And no love do I know Pretty slogans and statements Gestures and signs But still in the end The heart lacks any kind I wonder… do any understand Where I go The looks, the glances Assuming they know Who I am and who I be But what they look upon Is their rape of me. How again am I this Café au Lait brown How could this be When from the motherland I am bound. Does anyone ask Does anyone care I would say no If I hazard a dare. Now all these colors But funny I am washed out My skin is brown So why is Black my route. It is with meaning Not just a color code Disrespecting our journey The long and winding Black road. I will say it here for once and all time Black is the color of innumerable crimes Black is the color because my home is not here Black is my color because my home is not there Black is my color because my home is nowhere This is Aboriginals land they are the rightful heir The second great sin but of these things no care Black is my color because dark is the night Things of Blackness evoke things of fright. Black is my color because there is no other That can with one word describe my utter Horrid nature, fear and plight Strength and honour Though others steal the right. I am not Black because I am Black Think for a moment and see I am Black labelled because of my journey An experience rotted beyond thee Stolen, broken, beaten and raped But still here I stand in the midst of such hate Frustrated that you have to deal with me Because how are you still here I turn and look back as colors cross the ceiling With one tear on my cheek I speak with quiet but heavy seething I am Black History Look at me and see What you have done to my ancestors and me
