We're calling this the "Graeme Ewens Discomix". It is a mix of various styles of Congolese Rumba we are dedicating to that author who has written extensively about Franco and the influence of Congolese Rumba. His book "Congo Colossus: The Life and Legacy of Franco & OK Jazz" is incredible.
Included in this mix are selections from Angola also like those of Manuel D'Oliveira and Africa Ritmos. With the colossal success of Congolese Rumba, artists throughout the African continent started recording their Rumba with varying degrees of success. On the picture sleeve of the Africa Ritmos single it says (in Portuguese) "EXCLUSIVO DE DISCOTECA DU ANGOLA" This type of connection to discos not entirely uncommon, even Franco's legendary O.K. Jazz group initially grew out of the patronage of Oscar Kashama's O.K. club. These are the richly executed 'bogus latin' recordings that literally changed the world. We made a point of starting in 1948 with Wendo Kolosoy's hit "Marie Louise" and including three records featuring Lucie Eyenga.
Some of these records were 78rpm discs and we had to get someone with a Lenco B52 turntable to record them on a digital format. All the same the quality of these recordings is still a little rough.
