3 Hour Special on one the the most versatile talented guys around - Mike O'Reilly

Saturday March 6 it's my turn back at the helm of the Saturday Morning Show on CKCU. I'm really excited to be presenting a radio documentary/retrospective on one of the most talented and versatile performers around - he's an actor, voice over actor, comedian, and songwriter and all round musician and entertainer - I'm referring to Mike O'Reilly. You may know him as a bluegrass master, or Cecil Wiggins, or Melody Mike Cantrell of the Radio Kings, or Bolt Upright of the doo-wop rock band back in the late 70's... You'll hear guys like Paul Faubert, Vince Brooks, Les Emerson, John Partridge, Garry Greenland, Ray Legere, Dick Smith, Don Marcotte, Al Bragg...and of course, Mike himself. Join me from 7am to 10am for this 3 hour special on Saturday March 6, 2021. 93.1FM CKCU.

Mike used to live in the apartment above my wife and I on Waverley Street. Thankfully the front room was not well sound proofed. We would sit in a semi circular, bay window like room enjoying his music as he practiced. He never knew that we were hanging on every chord and word but it was so nice to have a private show many evenings.

Definitely enjoying the show, Pat. Yesterday I came across a couple photos of Mike that I took at the Ompah Stomp in 1979 (I think).

Great fun to hear the ol Meadow Muffin anthem....dont spose we could get the Ottawa Valley Traffic Report? Y’know, “yesterdays traffic was normal except for a 123 car pileup in downtown White Lake...” (drumroll, punchline....)

Once Mike opened for Doc Watson at High School of Commerce I think. A lady from the school came up to me on the balcony while he was on and whispered to me “Is that Doc Watson?” So Mike might have been at his best that night. Cheers.

Clearly a tremendous amount of work to put this extensive piece together.Should be replayed at a later date with extra promotion or wedged into Back Forty. I suggest that it could find a home on several CBC programs.Another CKCU high point.

A most interesting and excellent program. Are an idea the recordings of The Radio Kings still available? I was struck by the beauty of their version of Lullaby of the Leaves. I play bass on this song with a pianist friend and love it.

Thanks for a great show and a trip down memory lane. From inviting players up on stage with "Mike O'Reilly and Friends," opening for Valley 'Grass concerts, hosting events and giving advice to the bluegrass community Mike was always a class act. I'm sure Mike touched many musician's hearts over his long career. I'm sure there are many more stories yet to be told. Thanks again Mike!

I was fortunate to be a Roadie for Bolt Upright. My brother Armand Lafontaine played bass. I have fond memories of shows at the University of Ottawa and Carleton, as well at the Chaudiere Clu b (Rose Room). Those were great times the music was great the audience always so receptive. Such talent energy something i will never forget.Good Job on your program. Thank you.

I just came accross this on the weekend after I got the news about Mike and reminiscing and looking up things about Mike. Great piece and so nice you did it while Mike was around to enjoy it. You should do more of these about legendary people like Mike. Very well done.

Back in the early 1980's I owned a neighborhood pub named Wizards. Mike use to come in after his shows or just anytime and his friend "Doc" . He iwas the Funniest man I have ever met. Still one of me most favorite memories. He probably had to just wink his eye at St. Peter to pass in without a question..all the while pinching Peter's wallet. God Speed Mike.
