Happy Friday “Drivers” fam!
Today’s show is dedicated to two female legends from the diaspora in celebration of Black History Month.
In the first hour I’ll be sampling a small taste from some of Nina Simone’s vast catalogue featuring some of her more revolutionary tunes and songs that are a little more on the funky end of her songbook.
In the second hour we’ll be getting into a small taste of from the “Queen of Soul” herself songbook by featuring a few studio recordings with the main showcase being the phenomenal album “Aretha Live At Filmore West” in it’s entirety to get a true taste of her majesty.
It’s truly a mammoth of a task to fit everything I’m hoping to feature in two hours so there might be a little on demand overtime for all of you listeners who consume the show online.
As always the motto is more music less talk so I’ll be providing a few links in the show’s description and leave it to you all to dig a little deeper into these two phenomenal women’s careers which shouldn’t be too difficult with all of the online resources available these days.
Happy listening, thank you all for taking the time and hope you enjoy this week’s offering.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2025 AT 4 PM Duke Ellington’s Black, Brown & Beige (matinee) @NAC 1 Elgin St. Event: https://www.facebook.com/share/1GTJrXrqiL/ Tickets: Ticketsnac-cna.ca/en/event/37020 Duke Ellington’s landmark symphonic jazz composition, Black, Brown and Beige is perhaps the most significant work in the jazz repertory. Composed as a musical parallel to the history of the Negro in America, it tells the history of African Americans through slavery, emancipation, civil war, and their ascendancy in Harlem. This seminal jazz symphony was only ever performed in its entirety by Ellington’s orchestra a handful of times in 1943. In the many decades since, it has rarely been heard live. Now for the first time in Canada, the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra, with a 16-piece ensemble, will perform the entire work, as well as other significant compositions Ellington wrote to portray black life. While this special presentation will take place as part of Black History Month, this incredible music remains vitally relevant in light of present-day racial equality. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take in this special programme.
