Friday Drive
Friday February 2nd, 2024 with Trevor Walker

Happy Friday Drivers! This week I’ll be focusing the majority of the show to two great vocalists who just left us only this January. Marlena Shaw passed January 19th and Micheal Watford on January 26th. Both who have been staples throughout the years for me and my obsession with music. I’ll keep my descriptions brief so as to focus on the music and direct you to the show’s interactive page where I’ll provide a few links. Marlena Shaw was a stellar Jazz, Blues, Soul and Disco singe who’s career spanned from the 1960’s and performed right up until her passing this year, she was into her 80’s. Aiming to fill the first “Unwind” hour with some favourites from Marlena Shaw, with the very limited discography I possess, focused mostly on juggling between her first two albums, of which I believe “The Spice Of Life” should be considered essential. Marlena Shaw: YouTube Interview: Discogs: Wiki: Rolling Stone: The Guardian: Billboard:! In the second “Wind Up” hour I’ll be running through some of my favourite Micheal Watford recordings that I’ve been collecting since my intro to his gospel influenced vocal stylings that have become classics in the Deep House music scene. Micheal Watford: YouTube: (live in Toronto) Discogs: Wiki: World Cinema Paradise: DJ Mag: Mixmag: Thank you for taking the time, happy listening and I hope you enjoy the show.

Life Drawing
@Art House Cafe
555 Somerset St., W.

We want to make sure that all of our artists and models are comfortable, respected, and able to work effectively! Here are some ground rules for our Life Drawing sessions to help make that happen.
1. Please keep all electronics off or silenced during the session.
2. Please only enter/exit the session in the breaks between poses.
3. Keep your voices down and conversations to a minimum while the model is posing. We love when local artists connect, but please wait for the halfway break or step outside to do so!
4. Artists own the work they produce during the session, and may share and distribute it how they wish. Models will never be identified by their full names.
5. Under no circumstances is the model to be touched or photographed by artists.
6. Comments, concerns, or feedback about any part of the session should be discussed directly with the facilitator.
If you have any questions or input for our ground rules, send us a message!

Bia Ferreira is a Brazilian singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and activist. Her music, which she defines as "MMP — Música de Mulher Preta," discusses topics such as feminism, anti-racism and homophobia. She makes music that harnesses a combination of funky beats, reggae and soulful ballad grooves while lyrically pushing her listeners toward the discomfort that generates "movemente,” or action. Her lyrics have been described as "escrevivência,” a term Conceição Evaristo uses to “tell our stories from our perspectives.” It represents the subjectivity of a Black woman in Brazilian society.

Ottawa Jazz Festival pres: Ladysmith Black Mambazo Benifit Concert & Social!
@Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre
355 Cooper St., Ottawa
Reserved Seating: $105
General Admission: $75
(Includes a $50 tax receipt, issued after the event)

The 44th Ottawa Jazz Festival is a little more than 4 months away. To lighten our hearts and souls after the long, dark, cold months, the Festival is delighted to present the fabled Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a Benefit Concert & Social on April 3, 2024, 6:30pm at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (355 Cooper St. on the corner of Cooper and O’Connor Streets).
For 60 years, South Africa’s five-time Grammy Award winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. Paul Simon’s 1987 Graceland album introduced the iconic group to the world. “It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their [Ladysmith Black Mambazo] singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” – Paul Simon

Founded by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, the three elements of the group’s name comes from the founder’s hometown of Ladysmith, the black ox (considered to be the strongest farm animal), and mambazo, which means axe in Zulu (symbolic of the choir's ability to "chop down" the competition) – Wikipedia. The late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honour.
“Undulating rhythmic phrases that push and pull … harmonizing that is both ethereal and earthy.” – World Music, UK
Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people, singing a message of peace, love and harmony. With their 2024 release, Soothe My Soul…Songs From Our South African Church, the group puts their own spin on gospel music.
The Social includes complimentary canapés, a cash bar and mystery martinis with exciting gift items! Mystery Martini packages may contain anything from restaurant vouchers, gift baskets, trips, spa & salon outings, merchandise, adventure packages and so much more. You just never know, it’s a special mystery – just for you!
Doors open & Social at 6:30pm
Benefit Concert at 8pm

Mary Ancheta Quartet is based out of Vancouver, BC. Keyboardist Mary Ancheta is a Canadian / Filipina artist who steps into the spotlight with her genre-bending, organic, modern take on jazz and electro-funk. Inspired by the likes of Squarepusher, The Meters, John Scofield, and Prince, Ancheta knows what’s up when it comes to arresting melodies and irresistible grooves with Trent Otter on drums, Dominic Conway on sax, and Matt Reid on bass.
Encompassing her experience in film scoring, Ancheta seeks to tap into raw-fuelled moments favouring grittiness over perfection. The Mary Ancheta Quartet will perform songs from their highly anticipated debut EP, Level Up. Last summer, they played on the Mainstage to Jazz Festival audiences all across Canada alongside Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Sun Ra Arkestra, Domi & JD Beck, Melody Gardot, and more.
