Friday Drive
Friday January 19th, 2024 with Trevor Walker
[SumthinOldSumthinkNew]

Happy Friday "Drivers"! Some nice vibes in store for you all this week with the usual assortment of varied genres. Some new tings and a few slightly older selections in store. Gonna be keeping the vibe somewhat downtempo in our unwind from the week first hour and taking it up to a mid tempo to wind you up for your weekend in hour two. Will be featuring a few extra drops from a fellow selector, producer and the founder of “Push The Fader” record label, DJ Centre who was kind enough to sort a brother out with some phenomenal wax that I’m itching to share with you all on todays show and in the coming weeks. Happy listening!

SESSION GROUND RULES
We want to make sure that all of our artists and models are comfortable, respected, and able to work effectively! Here are some ground rules for our Life Drawing sessions to help make that happen.
1. Please keep all electronics off or silenced during the session.
2. Please only enter/exit the session in the breaks between poses.
3. Keep your voices down and conversations to a minimum while the model is posing. We love when local artists connect, but please wait for the halfway break or step outside to do so!
4. Artists own the work they produce during the session, and may share and distribute it how they wish. Models will never be identified by their full names.
5. Under no circumstances is the model to be touched or photographed by artists.
6. Comments, concerns, or feedback about any part of the session should be discussed directly with the facilitator.
If you have any questions or input for our ground rules, send us a message!

YAO: Kintsugi - La Beauty Dans Le Chaos…
@Shenkman Arts Centre
245 Centrum Boulevard
Event:
https://fb.me/e/1GEoyhSRt
Tickets:
Ticketsshenkmanarts.ca/en/yao

Between slam, soul, funk and Afro sounds, YAO explores the themes of pain, resilience and hope in this personal and therapeutic show. Inspired by his new album of the same name (Kintsugi), he uses his talents as a lyricist and performer to transform his life wounds into sensory, poetic and musical immersion.
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold – thus transforming the cracks, and the object itself, into a more beautiful and stronger work of art. From the idea of making a "person kintsugi", this show will make you experience intimate moments of fragility, vulnerability and introspection; sometimes raw, sometimes brusque, but always true and authentic.
After his last show Nomade (from the album Lapsus), presented more than 150 times in 7 different countries, and awarded "Show of the Year" at the Gala Trille Or 2019, YAO offers you a little beauty in chaos with Kintsugi .
Design: YAO
Scenography and staging: YAO, Gaële & Didier Lucien
Musicians: Simon Poirier-Lachance (drums), Liviu Pavel (bass), Elijah Mansevani (guitar), Javier Chacón (keyboards)
Sound engineer: Cameron Hanes / Frédérik Hébert
Opening act : Woodney Pierre: Singer-songwriter, Woodney Pierre is a city girl, born in Montreal and raised in Toronto.
Her music marries beautifully her Haitian roots with her love of soul music.
In 2012, she founded The Matty Jae Youth Foundation in support of mental health and suicide prevention awareness through the arts and mentorship. Singing has always been an instrument and a road to expression and communication.

Bia Ferreira is a Brazilian singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and activist. Her music, which she defines as "MMP — Música de Mulher Preta," discusses topics such as feminism, anti-racism and homophobia. She makes music that harnesses a combination of funky beats, reggae and soulful ballad grooves while lyrically pushing her listeners toward the discomfort that generates "movemente,” or action. Her lyrics have been described as "escrevivência,” a term Conceição Evaristo uses to “tell our stories from our perspectives.” It represents the subjectivity of a Black woman in Brazilian society.

Mary Ancheta Quartet is based out of Vancouver, BC. Keyboardist Mary Ancheta is a Canadian / Filipina artist who steps into the spotlight with her genre-bending, organic, modern take on jazz and electro-funk. Inspired by the likes of Squarepusher, The Meters, John Scofield, and Prince, Ancheta knows what’s up when it comes to arresting melodies and irresistible grooves with Trent Otter on drums, Dominic Conway on sax, and Matt Reid on bass.
Encompassing her experience in film scoring, Ancheta seeks to tap into raw-fuelled moments favouring grittiness over perfection. The Mary Ancheta Quartet will perform songs from their highly anticipated debut EP, Level Up. Last summer, they played on the Mainstage to Jazz Festival audiences all across Canada alongside Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Sun Ra Arkestra, Domi & JD Beck, Melody Gardot, and more.

The Three Degrees are a very interesting act! Their first album MAYBE is a classic. J Dilla used it on DONUTS. They still make music to this day! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three_Degrees
