Friday Drive
Friday November 3rd, 2023 with Trevor Walker
[FDFDF 2023 EP 2:3]

Happy Friday Drivers! Back at it with episode 2/3 of the FDFDF (Friday Drive Funding Drive Freestyle) for CKCU’s annual funding drive Running October 27th and runs until November 12th. Looking to enlist your support for the radio station I’ve been volunteering at since 1991, producing various programs over the years. Currently offering “The Friday Drive”, two hours of grooves to unwind you from your workweek and wind you up for your weekend every Friday since September 2005. We’re trying to raise $165 000 in this year’s campaign which is one third of the stations annual budget to keep the station operating. You can donate directly to your favourite show, hopefully, the Friday Drive Campaign by clicking the donate button on the CKCU website which takes you to the “Canada Helps” site or use the link in the “Friday Drive” interactive page which I’ve provided in the show description. I’ve got a growing list of donors to thank profusely for their very generous donations and apologies for not being able to thank all the last minute donations that came in last week as I ran out of time but the honourable mentions will be coming today! As always, thank you for taking the time to be here, happy listening and I hope you enjoy the show.

Logan Staats and Trevor Alguire Concert Fundraiser to Stop Ford’s Kemptville Prison
@Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre
365 Cooper St.

On November 3, opponents of the Ford government’s controversial plan to build a prison in Kemptville, Ontario are joining forces with Mohawk community leader and singer-songwriter Logan Staats to host a benefit concert in Ottawa at the Carleton Dominion Chalmers Centre (CDCC). Presented by the Coalition Against the Proposed Prison (CAPP), with co-presentation support from Debaser, the concert will raise funds to support the legal challenge waged by local residents against the Ford government’s plan to build the 235-bed prison in Kemptville, which will expand the number of prison cells on Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory, further investing provincial funds into a costly and ineffective approach to enhancing community well-being and safety.
Award-winning songwriter, performer, and community activist Logan Staats will perform, supported by local country artist Trevor Alguire and hosted by former CBC Ottawa news anchor Adrian Harewoood, in the CDCC’s 850-seat historic Sanctuary venue.

Miguel De Armas Quartet
@La Grange de la Gatineau
80 Chemin Summer, Cantley

*English below
Miguel De Armas is a pianist and composer, weaving together strands of Cuban and American jazz influences. Born in Havana, Cuba, Miguel studied at the Conservatory Amadeo Roldan and graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte with a Bachelor in Cuban Percussion.
His band features Marc Decho (bass), Michel Medrano (drums), and Arien Villegas (congas and Afro-Cuban percussions), blending jazz standards and Cuban traditional music. Through their appearances and collaborative efforts with local musicians, the Miguel de Armas Quartet brings a fresh sound to the Canadian musical scene. They have promoted a cultural appreciation for Cuban music and carried on the rich tradition of Cuban-Canadian musical collaboration.
For over a decade, Miguel toured with this band around the world and performed at world-class Jazz Festivals such as the North Sea, Montreux, Nice, Nantes, Normandia, Couleur Café, Barranquijazz, and Río de Janeiro Film Festival, among others.
Now Miguel has brought his musical talents to Ottawa, which he considers his adopted home. His hope is to introduce Canadians to the works of an original Cuban talent whose performances are nothing short of a master class in original Cuban jazz rhythms.

The Soul Motivators deliver a fresh take on a classic sound, blending 1970’s funk and soul, psychedelic jams and hip-hop breaks. They’ve shared stages with greats like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Lee Fields, Bernie Worrell and electrified crowds at major events such as the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, The PanAm Games, Sunfest, and Festival d'Ete. Their debut album, Free to Believe, was released on Do Right! Music in 2015, to national and international acclaim. 2017 saw the release of the Dirt on The Floor EP through Detroit’s Funk Night Records. A string of sold-out tour dates brought their high-octane live show to the masses.
Their 2020 album Do The Damn Thing was the first recording to feature the power-house vocal stylings of Shahi Teruko – whose relentless fire and electrifying performances have been shaking up audiences since she joined the band in 2015. Having celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2022, the band returned with a brand new album Do It Together (Do Right! Music) and electrified crowds across Western Canada on their recent summer tour.

Artist Bios:
Dancer and designer Tangent has been performing and teaching dance since the nineties. She got hooked on the underground sounds of house and breaks in the first wave of Rave culture and never looked back. As founding member of the all-woman B-Girl Crew DECYPHER CRU (2000-2010), co-director of the house dance collective Capital Sessions (2008-present)and resident instructor at the Flava Factory Dance Studio (2011-2023) she has been choreographing, performing, organizing events, teaching and studying dance for the last 20 years.
She has studied from dance masters and pioneers in NYC, Paris, London and Tokyo such as Bravo, Archie Burnett, Marjory Smarth, Ejoe Wilson, Future EOF, Whichway Shannon, Tone McGregor, Caleaf Sellers, Brian “Footwork” Green, Buddha Stretch, Sekou Heru, Dazl, Yugson, Mamson, as well as Ken Swift, Ynot, Mr. Wiggles, Tyrone Proctor, Jazzy Jay, Poppin Pete, Benny and Aus Ninja, and Melissa Aguirre.
She has been actively involved in building up her urban arts community with her work with House of Paint Urban Arts Festival, Capital Sessions and Flava Factory Dance Studio.
She has been involved as artistic director, choreographer and dancer in several video projects, including for the Juno Award nominated musical group Silla + Rise and for the NAC Canada Performs and Revive series.
Having a trained visual eye and a meticulous attention to detail, her approach to dance is conceptual and she bears the name Tangent well, constantly surprising audiences and drawing on art-forms such as Martial Arts, Parkour and Yoga to inform her art.
Rise Ashen
Rise Ashen has devoted his life to the study of sound and movement. From his early years as a B-Boy in Montreal in the 80s to his studies at Fanshawe College (North America's Oldest Recording School) and the Banff Centre for the Arts, his focus has been on applying hi-fi knowhow to global dance music. His record collection spans the four corners of the world with club music of all tempos as his primary focus. As a DJ, he blends it all in a worldly mash and is always the sweaty and dynamic life of the party. He has played in clubs and festivals across the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia. His study of Yoga has led him to combine his musical journey with his Yogi journey and he has been DJing extensively for yoga classes, festivals and events since 2012.
With his partner Tangent, he founded Capital Sessions Community House Dance Practices in 2010 to share the couple’s love for house dance music and culture.
His first album with Algonquin singer Flying Down Thunder received a Juno nomination in 2012, and the duo’s second album received a Native American Music Awards nomination in 2014. From 2015 to 2022 he collaborated with Silla, the Nunavut-based Inuit throat-singing ensemble, with whom he was long-listed for the Polaris Prize in 2016, nominated for a Juno Award in 2017 and for a Juno in 2019 as well as winning the Stingray award at Mundial in 2019 and Inuit Group of the Year and Artistic Video of the year at the SSSIMAs in 2021.
He believes music and dance are essential to human culture and that united, artists can lead humanity towards a more enlightened way of living. He aspires to embody the wise words of Fela Kuti: "when the higher forces give you the gift of musicianship… it must be well used for the good of humanity"
