[ Creed Taylor CTI + Mixtape ]

Happy Friday Drivers! This week I’ll be digging into some of my favourites from the CTI catalogue with a splash of from Kudu collection to celebrate a small part of the contributions Creed Taylor has left us in the wake of his passing August 22 at the 93 years of age. Creed Taylor is best known for his CTI label of the 1970s, but he has been important in the jazz recording industry for quite some time. One of his most well known productions is “The Girl from Ipanema” and is he was credited with popularizing Brazilian in the 1960’s as well as working with so many legendary artists such as John Coltrane & Ray Charles, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith & George Benson to name a few. There is so much more that could be said about the man and so much amazing music to play for you all as usual never enough time but the next two hours should be a nice ride! Needless to say I’m going to let the music speak for itself but links are included below. Creed Taylor Biography by Scott Yanow from Creed Taylor born May 13, 1929 - Lynchburg, Virginia. died Aug 22, 2022 Creed Taylor is best known for his CTI label of the 1970s, but he has been important in the jazz recording industry for quite some time. He played trumpet early on before becoming the head of A&R at Bethlehem Records in 1954. Taylor was at Bethlehem during its two most significant years, recording such artists as Chris Connor, Oscar Pettiford, Ruby Braff, Carmen McRae, Charles Mingus, Herbie Mann and the J.J. Johnson-Kai Winding Quintet. In 1956, Taylor switched to ABC-Paramount, and in 1960 founded its Impulse subsidiary. Although he signed John Coltrane for Impulse in 1960, Taylor soon left to accept a job with Verve. Among his successes as a producer during the next five years were with the Stan Getz bossanova records, sets by Jimmy Smith, and work with Wes Montgomery. At A&M from 1967-69, Taylor's productions were often quite commercial, with the frequent use of strings and pop tunes, including Wes Montgomery's final three albums and some early efforts by George Benson; it was as if Taylor was searching for the formula he was later to perfect. In 1970, he founded CTI (Creed Taylor Inc.), and for much of the decade, Taylor had great success in balancing the artistic with the commercial. Among the artists who recorded some of their finest work for Taylor during this period were Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, George Benson and Hubert Laws; the Kudu subsidiary had funkier but no less successful projects by Grover Washington Jr. and Hank Crawford among others. However, by the mid-'70s, the larger labels were starting to lure Taylor's artists away, and although he was able to record Chet Baker, Art Farmer and Yusef Lateef, financial problems eventually forced CTI to go bankrupt; it was then acquired by Columbia. It is unfortunate that Creed Taylor has been blamed for the late-'70s/early-'80s sellout efforts by Hubbard, Turrentine, Benson and Laws for other labels, which were quite inferior to their gems for CTI. After years off the scene, Taylor founded a new CTI in the 1990s, which has had releases by Larry Coryell, Jim Hall and Donald Harrison, among others, but has thus far failed to establish its own identity like its predecessor. link: CTI Records Biography via CTI is a US record label owned and overseen by legendary jazz producer Creed Taylor (CTI stood for Creed Taylor Inc.). Label Code: LC 1969 / LC 01969 He began the CTI label in 1967 as an imprint of Herb Alpert's A&M Records. Three years later Taylor took CTI out from under the A&M umbrella and relaunched CTI as an independent label. Most titles from 1970 through 1977 were distributed by Motown. In 1978, the label filed for bankruptcy; however, much of its catalog has remained in print (Creed Taylor launched the 8000 reissue series in 1979.) Taylor and Vic Chirumbolo, CTI's Vice-President and Sales Manager, pulled through and formed a new distribution deal with Columbia Records, but this deal was short lived, and ended in 1980 with Columbia retaining the rights to CTI's master tape library (i.e., the titles released between 1970 and 1979.) Then the label went independent once again, and continued active until 1984, releasing new albums by such artists as Jim Hall, Roland Hanna and the all-star studio band Fuse One. Creed Taylor restructured CTI in 1989, following a jury award as a result of the long running lawsuit with Warner Brothers over George Benson's contract. Creed Taylor resumed his partnership with engineer Rudy Van Gelder and photographer Pete Turner when recording the all-star session Rhythmstick in June 1989 (an ambitious project released on vinyl, CD, VHS and LaserDisc in 1990). Five other joint CD/VHS/Laserdisc projects were planned with CD distribution initially being handled by PolyGram, then Mesa/Bluemoon Recordings, Ltd.(1991-92), Independent National Distributors, Inc. 1993-94 and finally Koch Records(1995-96). In 1993, David Bean was appointed President of CTI Records and Video in New York. He was joined shortly afterwards by David Grossman as VP of Sale and Marketing, and together they handled the final CTI original releases, numbered 6723**-2. The final CTI original release is believed to be Steve Laury - Vineland Dreams. EVENTS (that might be of interest): Friday: Gaiafest 2022 @Gaia Wellness Retreat 209 ch.
