Happy Friday Drivers!
Or as happy as it can be when we lose two influential and innovative contributors to the global music scene.
In hour one I’ll be featuring the music of Frederik Lager.
Hour two I’ll be doing a very crammed tribute mix for a small taste of Patrick Adams musical legacy.
(additional content exclusively on demand)
Hour One:
“Fredrik Lager aka Freddie Cruger & Red Astaire left us much too young the weekend of June 11 and is estimated to have been between 45 - 50 years old.
He first became acquainted with hip-hop while working as a break dancer in the early 1980s and was introduced to the world of black dance music by his electric boogie dancing brother, who was collecting records at the time.
He worked weekends at Space, a famed import record store in Stockholm, around 1985-86. (special job cleaning the toilet). He began purchasing more albums at this time, primarily electro and rap tracks, but also disco and funk 12″/7″ oldies.
As things progressed, in1988, he purchased his first drum machine and turntables (which he considers to be the best investment he’s ever made).
Around the year 91, he met Mad Mats (Raw Fusion/Jugglin’) and began hanging out in Mats’ downtown Stockholm studio. This sparked a friendship and business partnership that continues to this day.
He acquired his first sampler in 1992 and released his first 12″ vinyl under the band Chimney Heads in 1994, (only 100 copies printed).
The characteristic style of Freddies productions are a blend off old school hip-hop and b-boy grooves mixed up with dirty funk, soul, reggae, latin and disco rhythms.
From the mid-1990s to the present he’s collaborated with a diverse range of musicians, including China Moses (DeDe Bridgewater’s daughter), Bob Powers (A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots), Rappadon, Baz Baz, La Nata (France), ADL, Desmond Foster, Linn, Ayo, SwingFly, Anthony Mills, Bas-1, and many others.
He's been signed to Jugglin' Records (sub-label to Raw Fusion Recordings) but has releases on Swedish Brandy, GAMM (as the notorious Red Astaire) and his own Home Grown label. Besides this he also travelled the world as a renowned DJ spinning everything from future to old-school funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, disco and latin.”

Hour Two:
This hour is definitely not enough time to fully explore this man’s genius but time wasn’t my friend while I was compiling this playlist and have included an extra half hour of content for anyone streaming on demand.
Quoted from Discogs:
Patrick Peter Owen Adams
US disco, soul and boogie producer, arranger, songwriter and musician.
He is known primarily for his production and songwriting work on the New York-based labels P&P Records, Red Greg Records, Salsoul Records, Prelude Records and major labels like Atlantic, as well as his studio projects Cloud One, Bumblebee Unlimited, Inner Life, Musique, Phreek and The Universal Robot Band. He has won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award 3 times and has earned 32 gold and platinum records.
Born on March 17, 1950 in Harlem, New York City, U.S.A., died June 21, 2022, Patrick's childhood was spent singing in choirs and attending concerts at the legendary Apollo Theater.
For over 50 years Patrick Adams was an iconic producer whose’s work span a considerable gamut from Underground Disco with a strong RnB bent to Funky electro shakers throughout the 80s. Mr Adams was always adapting to the direction musical head winds were blowing while injecting his envelope pushing template. Musique “In The Bush” & “Keep On Jumping” are among his most famous smashes!
His father bought him a trumpet and in his teens Adams began playing guitar and writing songs. He honed his arranging skills by dissecting the song structure and arrangement patterns of the records he heard on the radio. In 1970 he was appointed Vice President of A&R for Perception Records (5)/Today Records where he discovered teenage vocal trio Black Ivory and met his future friend and longtime musical collaborator Leroy Burgess. In 1974 Adams left Perception Records (5)/Today Records and started his own production company, Patrick Adams Productions, Inc. He met Peter Brown of P&P Records through mutual friend Lonnie Johnson and started producing experimental records for Peter's many labels. He also formed a musical collective called the The P.A. System. Some of the artists he has worked with include Ace Spectrum, Black Ivory, Bruni Pagan, Candi Staton, Debbie Taylor, Eddie Kendricks, Fonda Rae, Gladys Knight, Herbie Mann, Loleatta Holloway, Main Ingredient, Narada Michael Walden, Rick James, The Salsoul Orchestra, Shannon, Sister Sledge, Skipworth & Turner, The Spinners and more. In the '80s he started working as an engineer at Power Play Studios and did work for artists like Eric B. & Rakim, Heavy D. & The Boyz, Keith Sweat, R. Kelly, Salt-N-Pepa and Teddy Riley.
