First up we reconnect with my old friend Tom Wilson, as he's performing tonight (Thursday, October 3rd) as part of Minoshkite Ottawa's Indigenous Music and Arts Festival at the Bronson Centre. This special event also includes performances by Mimi O’Bonsawin, Qattuu, Siibii and Theland Kicknosway. This event is FREE, but you do need to book tickets - so see the link below. We talk to Tom about his new single, Death Row Love Affair, and about his new musical production that he hopes will be coming to the National Arts Centre in the future. We hear more about how much Tom's life has changed and how his artistic output has exploded since he discovered he is a Mohawk ten years ago. Always a pleasure to connect with Tom, who was first on this program back in its earliest days when he was with the Florida Razors!!

Then we have a fantastic conversation with Mikey Coltun, the bassist and producer for Mdou Moctor, who is appearing in concert at the Bronson Centre next Tuesday, October 8th. Coltun is an American who has been working with Mdou Moctor for eight years and he tells us how he first connected with Moctor and eventually joined his band. Mdou Moctor is a Tuareg songwriter and musician based in Niger known for his trancey, gritty guitar rock that is inspired by Tuareg guitar music. Coltun tells us about some of the themes running through Moctor's music such as preserving the Tuareg culture and language and calling out western colonialism and the negative impact it continues to have on many African cultural groups. In the conversation, we note how Moctar's music and the themes have threads that tie them to Coltun's American punk rock roots.

Don't forget this is a double bill with The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis.

The next song, "Stir The Ashes," only appears as part of the On Demand version of the Guest List. It had to be edited from the FM broadcast version of the show due to the 60 minute time limit.
Note: That Sousoume Tamacheq and Funeral For Justice were both shortened for the FM broadcast as well. You can hear both songs in their entirety here as part of the extended On Demand version of the Guest List. |
