Interviews with members of The New Hires and Alejandro Escoveda

We open the show in conversation with Aidan Morris and Phil Hulan of the Ottawa group The New Hires. They are releasing a new e.p. called For All Seasons this week with a concert at the 27 Club on Friday (Sept. 20.) (The concert also includes Hannah Vig, Oakridge Ave. and Dolonia.) We talk to Aidan and Phil about the fraught relationship at the centre of the song Weekend, and about what went into making the new e.p. They also tell us about how the group got together during the pandemic over the Internet, and how they balance work with their artistic endeavours. For tickets to see The New Hires on Friday night use this link: https://www.ticketweb.ca/event/the-new-hires-hannah-vig-the-27-club-tickets/13822463?pl=spectrasonic For more information about The New Hires and to buy their music, use these links: https://thenewhires.com/home https://thenewhiresmusic.bandcamp.com/ Then we welcome some rock royalty to the show, as we feature an interview with Alejandro Escovedo. We caught up with him immediately following his performance at CityFolk on Sunday night - and you can hear Maren Morris performing on stage in the background of our conversation. Escovedo has been making fantastic music since emerging with the punk group The Nuns back in 1975. In the 1980s he was part of one of my favourite bands Rank and File, and a group he created with his brother, True Believers. In the early 1990s he emerged as a solo artist and he has released 19 albums under his own name including his latest relase Echo Dancing which was released in late March. We talk about Echo Dancing, and how he decided to revisit and completely rework 14 of his older songs for this one. We talk about the edgy production on some of the songs and beautiful ballads like Sensitive Boys. We also talk about his 2018 album The Crossing, which documents in song the immigrant experience in America, telling the stories of two very interesting characters. For more information about Alejandro Escovedo go to his website: https://www.alejandroescovedo.com/ And to buy his music on Bandcamp use this link: https://alejandroescovedo.bandcamp.com/album/echo-dancing Thanks for listening today. Get out and see some live music this week and support independent music any way that you can! Take care.
