The Guest List
Thursday March 28th, 2024 with Joe Reilly
Interviews with Jessica Linnebach of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Andy Maize of Skydiggers and John Engle of Codeine

This is a jam-packed, super diverse and amazing show today... if I don't say so myself. NOTE: This On Demand version of the Guest List is longer than the FM broadcast version and includes additional interview segments with John Engle of Codeine and additional songs by the group as well. We open the show today in conversation with Jessica Linnebach, the Associate Concertmaster of the National Arts Centre Orchestra. She will be front and centre with the orchestra on Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 4 when she performs The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams. We talk to Jessica about this beautiful piece of music and the challenges of performing it. We also talk about how she started playing violin at a very young age and excelled at the instrument and about her family life as she is the partner of the NACO's Concertmaster Yōsuke Kawasaki. This is a fun and insightful conversation with Jessica. To learn more about Jessica Linnebach: https://nac-cna.ca/en/bio/jessica-linnebach For tickets to see the NACO perform on April 3 and 4: https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/33725 Next we check in with our good friend, Andy Maize, the lead singer of Skydiggers. The group released a pair of excellent EPs in 2023 and will be coming to Ottawa to perform for the first time in a while on Saturday, March 30 at the Bronson Centre. Andy tells us about how they put the two new EPs together and how they balance out their setlists between new material and old favourites. This seminal group released two highly influential albums in the early 1990s and then broke up. Their albums (and one EP) were at the forefront of the slowcore movement and you can hear the influence of Codeine in many groups that grew out of that period of alternative, indie rock. We talk to John about the group's influential sound, about why in 2022 they finally released some sessions they recorded back in 1992 , and why they are back on the road for a major tour in 2024 - thirty years after calling it quits. It's an interesting conversation with a man who helped create a signature guitar sound in slowcore. You can see Codeine performing at Club SAW on Friday, March 29th. For more information about Codeine: https://www.subpop.com/artists/codeine https://www.codeine.nyc/ And for tickets to see Codeine in performance in Ottawa: https://www.ticketweb.ca/event/codeine-neurotypes-ex-luthor-club-saw-tickets/13425583?pl=spectrasonic Thanks for listening today. Get out and see some live music and support independent music in any way that you can.

Hi Joe. Have not caught up with you in quite awhile, but I do tune in to the show. Hope all is well with you. Looking forward to your chat with John Engle having just discovering Codeine recently. Can't believe how long they have been around and I somehow missed them entirely. Hard to believe for a music junky like me.

Hi Neil. Great to hear from you. It's not that surprising that you never heard of Codeine as they really only put out 2 albums and 1 EP between 1990 and 1994 and then disappeared into the ether. I was pretty stunned about getting a chance to talk to Codeine's John Engle since the group hasn';t put out any new music since 1994. It's nice when doing an interview forces you to go back to an album you bought 30 years ago and re-experience it and remember why it meant so much to you in the day. Take care.
