The Guest List
Thursday March 16th, 2023 with Joe Reilly
Interviews with Stewart Goodyear, Field Guide and Reuben and the Dark
NOTE: The On Demand version of this program includes about 10 additional minutes of my interview with Reuben Bullock and an additional song by Reuben and the Dark that could not fit the 60 minute format of the FM broadcast of the Guest List.
We open the show today talking to Canadian classical pianist and composer Stewart Goodyear. Stewart is appearing at the National Arts Centre tonight (Thursday, March 16th) along with the Chineke! Orchestra from the U.K. Chineke! was founded in 2015 by the double bass player, Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE, to provide career opportunities for Black and ethnically diverse classical musicians in the UK and Europe. Chineke!’s mission is: ‘Championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music’. The program at the NAC tonight includes music created by Black composers, and includes Stewart Goodyear's Callaloo – A Caribbean Suite for Piano and Orchestra. Stewart talks to us about his musical influences and what went into the creation of this vibrant Suite and what we can expect at the National Arts Centre tonight.

Next we talk to Dylan MacDonald about his musical project Field Guide. He is bringing the group to Club SAW this Friday, March 17th... so go see them performing live instead of some obnoxious St. Patrick's Day event... really! Dylan talks to us about the personal songs on his 2022 album Field Guide and why he is releasing new versions of all of the songs on a new album called Tape Redux later this month.

Finally we talk to Reuben Bullock about his group Reuben and the Dark. Reuben tells us about the personal nature of his songs and how he doesn't really consider himself a vocalist - insert laughter here if you know this group and how powerful his vocals are... : ) We also talk about how many of the group's songs start quietly and slowly build to a beautiful apex and how they worked with Indigenous vocal group The Bullhorn Singers. You can see Reuben and the Dark performing at the National Arts Centre on Friday, March 24th and as Reuben explains they have some very special guests with them for this Ottawa performance.
