The Guest List
Thursday March 17th, 2022 with Joe Reilly
An interview with Ruby Singh about his incredible new album Vox.Infold - on which he brings together vocalists from a broad range of cultures to create amazing a cappella music.

NOTE: For the FM broadcast we had to edit a couple of these musical pieces and we had to cut some of the interview in order to fit into the 60 minute time slot. This On Demand version of the Guest List includes some additional interview segments with Ruby as well as all of the musical pieces in their entirety and one bonus track, "Horizon", which was not played during the FM broadcast. Enjoy. Today on the show we explore an incredible new recording from Vancouver artist, Ruby Singh. Ruby Singh is a multi award winning composer and producer who has been a longtime beloved member of the Vancouver artistic community. His creativity crosses the boundaries of music, poetry, photography and film, engaging with mythos, memory, justice and fantasy. Singh is an artist whose work is informed by sound found all around us. On this new recording, Vox.Infold, Singh works with vocalists from different cultural backgrounds to create a beautiful and tightly woven a cappella tapestry that is engaging, hypnotic and uplifting. Against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and amidst potent social unrest, this powerhouse vocal ensemble of Indigenous, Inuit, Black, and South Asian voices, reimagines how to sing together. The resulting work is so much more than a convergence of diverse vocal traditions. It is a complex rendering of what’s possible when we truly connect with each other's humanity. The album dives into a full bodied, resonant and sensuous expression housed in polyrhythms, lush harmonies, mimicry, and polyphonic poetry. On the program today we talk to Ruby Singh and he explains how this amazing project came together. We also listen to many of the fantastic musical pieces from the recording.
