An interview with Montreal violinist Jessica Moss about her new album Phosphenes
NOTE: During the first segment of our interview with Jessica Moss, her voice is very quiet and you will need to be attentive to hear what she is talking about. Her voice sounds stronger in the other interview segments, so hang in there through the first bit as this is a great interview in which Jessica is very generous in sharing her creative process with us.
Jessica Moss has recorded and performed with some great Montreal groups over the years - most notably Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Black Ox Orkestar. She has just released her fourth solo album entitled Phosphenes. It is a dark and brilliant album and as Jessica explains it truly is solo album in many ways - although she talks about and acknowledges the important role of her friend and producer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Jerusalem In My Heart.) Jessica talks about how her work grows out of improvisations and how hundreds of voice memos from her phone come into play in the creative process. She feels her process is inefficient but it certainly bears great results as indicated by this engaging new album full of beautiful music.
