Interviews with Donovan Woods, The Cardboard Crowns and the Skydiggers

We open the show today talking to Donovan Woods who is appearing at the National Arts Centre on Friday and Saturday night (December 13 and 14) along with Skydiggers and Basia Bulat in a "seasonal" show. Donovan says he'll have a couple of songs to fit the "season" but don't expect a Christmas set. We talk about how the song Next Year came about - and how it fits into a "year-ending" show. We also talk about the production on his album Both Ways and how he's approaching production for a new album. We also talk about Lori McKenna - one of my FAVOURITE singer-songwriters - and how he got to work with her on his new single While All The While. https://www.donovanwoods.net/ https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/23021 Next up with check in with Francois (Frank) Cunningham of the great Ottawa-Gatineau group the Cardboard Crowns. Joining us on the line is Frank's nine-month old daughter Vivianne as we discuss the challenges of being artists with young families and how the band finds time to play live and record with new responsibilities. Frank tells us how the new songs are ready for recording and how they touch on a lot of different musical influences. You can check out the Cardboard Crowns with Afterfunk at the Babylon Nightclub tomorrow night, Friday, December 13. https://www.thecardboardcrowns.com/ Finally we talk to Andy Maize of Skydiggers about the group's newest album Let's Get Friendship Right and the group's upcoming show on Friday and Saturday night at the National Arts Centre with Donovan Woods and Basia Bulat. We talk about some references to the Tragically Hip and Gord Downie on the song Five Cold Canadians and on this new album. Andy tells us that the album features many songs that pay tribute to people who have passed on in the past several years. He also tells us what to expect from Skydiggers when they are part of the seasonal show at the NAC. https://skydiggers.com/ Get out and see some live music this week... and remember to buy music from artists you love.... they cannot survive on the fees paid by streaming services.
