Any day that I get to talk to Jane Siberry is a great day. Jane is one of Canada's finest songwriters and recording artists - EVER. Her complete collection of recorded music puts her in the same realms as Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and international acts like Peter Gabriel. Artists that all have created beautiful and thoughtful art that truly touches people. Jane is appearing at the Ottawa Jazz Festival with a fantastic group of musicians on Saturday, June 22. Do not miss this show. Jane and I talk about things like how music is tied to our memories, how much she loves performing live and connecting with audiences and how you sometimes have to take a song for what it is - notably if it's about the stages of change that butterfly goes through before it becomes a butterfly. It's making me go back to one of Jane's beautiful songs "Hide Not Your Light." She has recorded and toured with Dwayne Gretzky and the O'Pears. She has just released her first album and it reveals a songwriter who is enjoying creating music with a funky, jazzy vibe that touches on a broad range of sounds. The band creates expansive, textured music that will appeal to fans of groups like the Decemberists and Radiohead. Adam talks to us about the overarching theme of the album - memory and how we recall the past... accurately and inaccurately. And he tells us how the band is dedicated to recreating the music from this album as closely as possible to the recording when they are on the road.
