Interviews with Jeremy Dutcher, Bonjay and Graham Nicholas

First up we talk with Jeremy Dutcher who is a classically trained tenor who is from New Brunswick and is of Indigenous heritage - he is from the Tobique First Nation. He has created an amazing, beautiful and moving debut album that brings together the sounds and the traditions of the Wolastoq community (including some archival recordings more than 100 years old) and merges them with a wide array of contemporary sounds and influences. It's hard to describe in words so you really need to get this recording and immerse yourself in its beauty. Jeremy will be in Ottawa on Friday night (May 25) to perform at the First Baptist Church. https://jeremydutcher.com/ https://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1645310-jeremy-dutcher-ottawa/ https://exclaim.ca/music/article/jeremy_dutcher-wolastoqiyik_lintuwakonawa Next up a dynamic duo that merges a wide array of soulful, funky and electronic influences into a powerful hybrid that you can hear on their new recording Lush Life. It is a lush collection of music from Bonjay and you can hear it live on Saturday night (May 26) at the 27 Club. We talk to both Alanna Stuart and Ian Swain about how they create this music in the studio and then bring it to life in concert. http://bonjaymusic.com/ Finally we check in with Graham Nicholas who will be appearing at Pressed on Saturday night (May 26) playing songs from his various albums, and his latest release Dial Tones and Pretty Tones. Graham tells us how he prefers to write songs that are narrative in nature and how artists like Tom Petty, the Byrds and a great underrated Canadian group the Blue Shadows have influenced his approach to songwriting. http://grahamnicholas.ca/ Get out and see some live music this week.

Do you know Cris Derksen? I hear some affinity between Dutcher and Derksen.

Yes. The two albums by Cris that I know of are fantastic. She is a great cello player and very inventive. This is Jeremy's debut album - it's fantastic.
