Interviews with Rosie and the Riveters, The Honest Heart Collective and Idioteque

First up we talk to Alexis Normand of Rosie and the Riveters about the group's new, second album Ms. Behave and their upcoming Ottawa appearance at the National Arts Centre on Wednesday, May 16. Alexis tells us how the album took on a distinctive feminist and political tone as the group worked through about 40 new songs for the recording - and then found that the songs that they had selected fit in perfectly with the rising awareness around sexual harassment issues and the empowerment of women in the media and on social media. Alexis talks about the process of putting the album together and how the group hopes to connect with and empower others through the new songs and ultimately be part of the process of building stronger communities. http://www.rosieandtheriveters.com/ https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/18933 Next we check in with Ryan McDonald of the Honest Heart Collective about the group's brand new album Grief Rights. The group is from Thunder Bay and definite blue collar, labour movement vibe can be heard in many of the songs on this album including the track "Debts" that we played on the show. Ryan talks about writing songs for this album from a third person, narrative perspective and how growing up in Thunder Bay with a Dad who was engaged in union activities has influenced some of the songs on Grief Rights. He also talks about how the band survived a harrowing winter crash several months ago and felt grateful to their fans as a successful Go Fund Me campaign helped them to recover financially and get back on the road. The Honest Heart Collective is back on the road and coming to Ottawa next Wednesday night (May 16) at the 27 Club. http://honestheart.co/ https://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1670582-honest-heart-collective-ottawa/ Finally we talk to Don Scott of Toronto's Idioteque about the group's upcoming show in Ottawa at the 27 Club on Friday, May 11th where the band will be playing all of Radiohead's OK Computer from start to finish. Don tells us how a bunch of musicians started getting together for fun to jam and play some Radiohead songs and how that grew into a band that occasionally plays special sets like this one for audiences and how this marks the first time that Idioteque is taking the show on the road to Ottawa, Kingston, Montreal and Quebec City. We also talk about the power of hearing this kind of music performed big and bold in a live setting and how that takes the music to a different level. You can experience this on Friday night at the 27 Club. http://www.idioteque.ca/ https://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1641371-idioteque-performs-radioheads-ottawa/ Get out and see some live music this week!
