Interviews with the Wilderness of Manitoba, Hillsburn and the Cardboard Crowns

On the show today we track down Will Whitwham to talk about The Wilderness of Manitoba's new release, the The Tin Shop ep. It's a beautiful, textured and dark collection of songs that may remind listeners at times of Simon and Garfunkel, Genesis a la Entangled (on Trick of the Tail) and CSN. We talk about taking those songs on the road as a duo (Will and Raven Shields are out doing stripped down concerts) and what to expect when the group performs at the Rainbow Bistro on Saturday night, May 20th. http://www.thewildernessofmanitoba.com/ Next up we catch up with Rosanna Burrill - one of the amazing voices in the folk pop group Hillsburn. The group had a great year in 2016 winning the Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year based on the strength of the group's debut album In The Battle Years and incredible live shows. We talk to Rosanna about the power of the song Farther In The Fire and how the group discovered its amazing vocal harmonies. We also discuss what's coming on a new album this year and then play one of the songs from that album. Check out Hillsburn at Live on Elgin on Saturday night, May 20. http://hillsburn.com/ Finally, we check in with one of my personal favourites - a band that started in Aylmer Quebec and includes band members who I played ball hockey with on my street when they were kids and coached when they were on soccer teams - the infectious Cardboard Crowns. We talk to Frank Cunningham (the bass player) about how the group has been balancing life, work and music making of late and what new material they've been working on - there is a song about the new guy running things south of the border... well at least he's running them for now!! You can see the Cardboard Crowns at the Black Sheep Inn on Friday night, May 19. https://www.thecardboardcrowns.com/ Get out and see some live music this week.
