Interviews with Public Animal, Pick A Piper and the Strumbellas

Wide ranging music and some great talk about how it's created on the show today. We start of with Ottawa-based Eric Larock who plays bass with Public Animal. He talks to us about the challenges of getting the band together to create new music, rehearse and play live gigs since the rest of the band lives in Toronto and have lots of musical projects on the go - notably Ian Blurton who is consistently busy producing music by other artists. We also talk about the music that Public Animal has the most affinity for - 70s power rock like Deep Purple and similar organ/guitar driven groups. We start off with a Deep Purple influenced cover of an April Wine nugget (from the "Electric Jewels" album) and wrap up with a powerful original. Check out Public Animal at the Dominion Tavern on Saturday night (April 1) as part of Juno Fest. http://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1441063-steve-adamyk-band-public-ottawa/ https://publicanimal.bandcamp.com/album/palace-arms https://www.facebook.com/thepublicanimal/ Next up we talk to Brad Weber, who is the drummer with Caribou and the driving force behind his own project/group Pick A Piper. Brad calls in from Columbia (yes in South America!) where he is taking a few days to explore the country after playing some gigs with Caribou in South America. We talk about how the music of his group Pick A Piper mostly grows out of rhythmic ideas and the way in which the group uses voices as part of the mix. We also talk about how he creates the music in the live setting with only 3 people on stage. Check it out next week on Thursday, April 6 at House of Targ. http://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1429401-pick-piper-ottawa/ https://pickapiper.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pickapiper/ Finally we check in with Simon Ward of the Strumbellas. The group had a breakout year in 2016 with their third album "Hope" and have 3 Juno Award nominations this weekend. We talk about the great year the group has had and about a unique show in Ottawa this weekend as part of JunoFest. The Strumbellas are playing a kid-friendly show on Saturday afternoon (April 1) (Doors at 3:00 and show at 4:00) at the Bronson Centre. Simon tells us how the band starting doing these kid friendly shows and what to expect. http://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1446543-strumbellas-kids-afternoon-ottawa/ http://www.thestrumbellas.ca/ Get out and see some live music this week.
