Interviews with Mobina Galore, Prozzak and Operators

On the show today we talk to three artists making very different styles of music and all three will be playing in Ottawa in the next week. First up it's Jenna Priestner who plays guitar and sings in the Winnipeg-based female punk duo Mobina Galore. The group is opening up for Against Me! Friday night (March 24) at the Bronson Centre. We talk about the themes of isolation and disconnection explored on the new album "Feeling Disconnected." We also talk about being two women making punk rock - yes that discussion still seems to be necessary in 2017 - and how they recorded the new album and how the create such a big sound with only two people on stage. Spectrasonic reports that there will be some tickets at the door for this show at the Bronson Centre. https://www.mobinagalore.com/ http://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1398505-against-me-ottawa/ From the gritty punk of Mobina Galore we move to the heartache fueled electro-pop sounds of Prozzak - a pop music sensation in the late 1990s and early 2000s that grew out of the collaboration of Jay Levine (Simon) and James Bryan McCollum (Milo) when they were part of the Philosopher Kings. Jay talks about how they developed the concept of Prozzak and how that eventually grew into cartoon characters and may eventually end up as some sort of characters in a musical. We also talk about how the duo got back together, the importance of a song like "Be As" back in 2000 (when they sang "be as gay as you want to be") and what to expect when Prozzak performs at Algonquin College's Commons Theatre next Thursday night, March 30. https://www.facebook.com/ProzzakOfficial/ http://www.algonquinsa.com/event/prozzak-forever-1999-tour/ Finally we talk to Dan Boeckner of Operators.... and of Wolf Parade and of Divine Fits... 'cause Dan is one busy musical guy. We talk a bit about his other projects (yes there will be another Divine Fits album at some point and a new Wolf Parade album this year) but mostly we talk about Operators' newest album "Blue Wave which is chock full of great late 70s and early 80s influenced sounds. Dan talks about the influence of New Order and of Ultravox in the John Foxx era and the brilliance of that group's album "Systems of Romance." He also talks about how being in the United States during the looooong presidential election campaign both depressed him and seeped into some of themes being explored on "Blue Wave." He also tells us about a great book he read recounting the collapse of the Soviet Union and how he sees parallels in the current American political landscape. You can see Dan and Operators performing at Zaphod Beeblebrox next Thursday night, March 30. http://www.operatorsmusic.com/ http://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1415745-operators-ottawa/ Get out and see some live music this week.....
