Interview with Scenic Route to Alaska, Tami Neilson and Sean McCann

Sorry about the late arrival today... traffic in Ottawa East was totally nuts!! Thanks to Janis Lockwood for covering a few minutes with great tunes. On today's show we talk to Trevor Mann who is the lead singer and principal songwriter for the group Scenic Route To Alaska. We talk about the group's pop-rock sound and how a couple of songs on the new album sit outside of that genre - like the serious and introspective "Taking Its Toll." Trevor also talks about how the group creates songs and the musical training of bassist Murray Wood. Tami channels music that reaches back to the era from the 1940s to the 1960s - with bits of country, soul, r&b, jazz and folk all part of her rootsy mix. Moreover this album partly chronicles her feelings around the death of her Dad (Ron Neilson) who was also her musical mentor. The song "Don't Be Afraid" was the final song he wrote and Tami brings it to life in an amazing way on this album. As a founding member of Great Big Sea, Sean helped to build one of Canada's finest live music acts. But he has left that group as part of his route to recovery from addiction.
