The Guest List
Thursday August 11th, 2016 with Joe Reilly
Interviews with Flatrock, Hillsburn and Wintersleep.

A great show with three acts that have ties to the East Coast of Canada. First up we talk to Melissa Murphy and Dan Rougeau of the group Flatrock. We find out that the group takes its name from the small town in Newfoundland called Flatrock and we hear about how the members of the group came together as music students at Humber College... studying jazz. The group's sound has more ties to pop, rock and some bits of folk with Melissa's strong vocals often soaring over soundscapes created by Dan and the others in the group. We talk about the music and some of the themes explored in the songs. The group is out on its first big tour and plays at the Avant Garde in Ottawa tonight (August 11.) http://www.flatrocksound.ca/ Next up we hear from a group that takes its name from a small town in Nova Scotia. Hillsburn features great vocals with three of the group's members taking lead vocals and frequently harmonizing with one another. The folk quintet sings the songs of the group's lyricist Paul Aarntzen and Clayton Burrrill who is one of the singers, talks to us about many of the themes on Hillsburn's debut album "In The Battle Years." The group will be in Ottawa on Sunday, August 28 at Live On Elgin! http://www.hillsburn.com/ Finally we connect with Tim D'Eon who plays guitars and keyboards with Wintersleep. We talk about how the group's song "Amerika" from the latest album "The Great Detachment" fits so well with the current American election and Tim explains that the lyrics were written well before Donald Trump emerged as a presidential candidate. We talk to Tim about "The Great Detachment" and we discover that his favourite song to play from that album is "Metropolis." Wintersleep is playing this weekend along with the Sheepdogs, Monster Truck, the Glorious Sons, and others at the Mill Street Brew Pub on Wellington the weekend (August 12 and 13.) http://www.wintersleep.com/ http://dinealonerecords.com/news/hopped-and-confused-festival/ Get out and see some live music this week.
