For my final show during this bicentennial anniversary of Liszt's birth (Oct 22 1811), I showcase two incredible works by Liszt, his final symphonic poem from 1881 depicting in exquisite orchestral writing three stages of life: birth, the struggle for being, and to the grave. We also hear a very unique recording of a well known masterpiece of Liszt. This recording by John Ogdon was done late in his short life, after years spent in a hospital for the mentally ill. Ogdon had lost some of his titanic technique but some of these late recordings are among the best piano recordings by anyone, like his Busoni and this tormented performance of Liszt's "Dante sonata". |
